Patrick is a romantic so instead of going for Richie -- who was too emotionally available and ready -- he went for the opposite. Kevin was a lot of forbidden in one guy -- boss, in a relationship, emotionally stingy -- so of course, Patrick wanted him.
It's a little bit Russell's fault who is great at comedy but needed more nuance here, and a lot more on the writing because he never really became a real person.
